Linda Taalman of Taalman Koch Architecture is documenting the hands-on renovation of a double unit in the (1953) Craig Ellwood Courtyard Apartment in Hollywood on Dwell. Taalman and Koch are remodeling a 1,600-square-foot, live-work courtyard apartment in the 3,200-square-foot, two-story, four-unit block building, which they’re using as a home to raise their daughter and an office for up to six people.
Ruth Duckworth was a modernist sculptor whose work included monumental sculptures, murals, and smaller ceramic pieces. In the early 1980s, Duckworth renovated a former pickle plant on Chicago’s north side, which she used as her home and studio. Check it out…

It was built in 1951, by architect Maynard Woodard, a former studio set designer for his personal residence while working at Welton Becket & Assoc. Harris and Leshem took the home through a yearlong renovation process, and the result is an absolutely pristine example of an updated mid-century modern, and pretty much my ultimate dream home…
Kaweah Falls is a modern rustic retreat tucked away at the base of the Sequoia National Park in beautiful Three Rivers, California–just 3 hours north of LA and 4 hours south of San Francisco. The home’s original structure was built in 1947 by architect Frank Robert, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. This spectacular 3,000 square foot home literally has a river running through it–right under the dining room! While sipping wine at the bar, you can watch rainbow trout swimming below through the glass-bottomed floor.
A while back I wrote about artist/designer Kelly Lamb’s beautiful geo-birdhouses, planters, and terrariums. Kelly has also designed interiors for Malo restaurant in Silver Lake, the Echo nightclub in Echo Park, and she’s designed and produced artist’s campaigns with corporations like Salvatore Ferragamo and Coke. And she also renovates old homes. After reading up on Kelly, I just had to bug her for an interview. And, awesomely, she complied.
