The Jones House & Studio #1, 1938, A. Quincy Jones and Ruth Schneider Designer/Builders. Shortly after graduating from architecture school at the University of Washington, Jones brought fellow architecture student Ruth Schneider down to Los Angeles where he they were married a year later. While still apprenticing with architect Burton A. Schutt they designed and built their first house, a duplex set naturally within the native chaparral high on the western slope of Laurel Canyon. Reflecting the philosophy and many of the design ideas Jones would continue to develop throughout his career, the building is iconic. After the war Jones converted the buildings to a single family residence, where he established his first design studio.
