Zombiethon: Run For Brains

ZombiethonLogo

Halloween is typically one of the more glutinous holidays–stuff your face with candy as a kid or dress up and drink your face off as an “adult”. But this year, why not do something fun and charitable while dresses up as a dead body that’s been brought back to life by a supernatural force?

Zombiethon is a community FUN run/walk event held on Halloween, Saturday October 31, 2009, from 4-6pm, along the recreation trail around Silver Lake Reservoir in Los Angeles, California. This event is organized to raise donations for Brain Cancer Research. All of the proceeds will be donated to the local charity, City of Hope, to find a cure for this devastating disease. Your $10 donation will grant you a numbered participation bib and goodie bag!

This is a family-friendly event, and everyone is encouraged to arrive in their finest zombie attire. If you don’t have access to zombie make-ups, don’t worry, for an additional donation of $5, you may have your make-up applied by professional special effects make-up artists on site! Not a runner? Don’t worry! It’s not a formal race, just a chance for everyone to get out there and have some fun while supporting a very important cause.

Harris’ Hansen House

2305-w-silver-lake-blvd

Stop #3 on the MAK Tour was another Harwell Hamilton Harris House – the Hansen House in Silver Lake overlooking the reservoir. Built ten years after the Alexander House, Harris looked to blend function, nature and aesthetics and place the occupants’ needs and comfort above all else (sounds like a good idea to me). Harris succeeded so well that the original owners lived in the house for 40 years.

I liked this house a lot for a few reasons. First, the living room was big and open, unlike some of the other houses we saw. It had a great flow and every room has either a garden or lake view. Second, the color palette has been kept true to Harris’ original specifications and for good reason – it gave off a very natural and warm feeling.

2038 Redcliff Street In Silver Lake

2038-1

2038 Redcliff Street
Los Angeles, CA 90039
2 BR, 2BA
$1,198,000

This is one of the more interesting houses I’ve come across in a while and that’a saying something since L.A. is full of interesting homes. As you can see from the photo above this house was designed for the indoor/outdoor lifestyle enthusiast (which I guess is pretty much anyone who chooses to call Southern California home).

I love the open walkways connecting different areas of the house, and the dark wood gives it a really cool “cabin” feel. Check out this great long walkway leading to what looks like the front door:

Before we look inside, it should be noted that this house is set way up in the hills which means great views of the reservoir and plenty of peace and quiet – and plenty of places to sit and take in the view:

13 Facts About The Silver Lake Reservoir

silver-lake-reservoir

The reservoir in the middle of Silver Lake functions as the neighborhood’s centerpiece. Houses look out onto it from the hills, people bike, run and walk their dogs around it, and residents drive past it almost every day. Yesterday I took my dog for a long walk around the reservoir and while doing so a few questions popped into my mind (what is it for? what’s with those black balls?) so I decided to make this list of Fun Facts About The Silver Lake Reservoir:

  1. The jogging path around the reservoir is approximately 2.2 miles.
  2. The upper section is actually named “Ivanhoe” after the 1819 Sir Walter Scott novel.
  3. The lower (bigger) section is named “Silver Lake” after Herman Silver, a member of Los Angeles’ first Board of Water Commissioners.
  4. It does not actually provide water for the Silver Lake neighborhood, but rather to South Los Angeles communities.
  5. Silver Lake residents get their water from Eagle Rock.
  6. The jogging path was the first step in turning the reservoir into recreational use only.
  7. Plans are in the works to expand the Dog Park by 75 feet.
  8. The reservoir was used to put out fires in Griffith Park in 2007.
  9. The reservoir was drained last year because of bromate.
  10. The “bird balls” in the Ivanhoe section are there to shade the water and prevent a chemical reaction triggered by sunlight that forms bromate.
  11. It takes 3 million bird balls to cover the Ivanhoe section.
  12. The Silver Lake section is not covered because it is not a major supplier of water to the area – the water from Silver Lake is only used during hot periods and peak flow hours.
  13. It takes 15-20 days to completely re-fill the 795 million gallon Silver Lake section.

2171 W Silver Lake Dr

Los Angeles, CA 90039
$1,069,000

This house really intrigues me. It’s located in what I feel is the best part of Silver Lake – along Silver Lake Dr overlooking the reservoir. Sure there’s a gate around it (the reservoir) but I wouldn’t mind waking up every morning to a water view. And this is as close as it gets t0 that in this part of L.A. Plus there’s a jogging path (and dog park) right outside your door.
