Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday… They all came and went. Holiday shopping accomplished? Zero. Yes, I admit it. I’m a procrastinator. And if you’re like me, you know how brutal holiday slacker-shopping can be. As December chugs to it’s wrapping paper covered conclusion, frenzied shoppers hit the mall in a panicked wave, grabbing whatever is left, not pausing to contemplate: Will my dad appreciate this Old Navy Trapper Hat? … Whatever! Put it in the cart! Mark it off the list!
This year, make life easier and shop your neighborhood instead. And (note to self) maybe try to do it before the bitter end. Check out some of Take Sunset’s favorite spots in Silver Lake for gift giving…
HOME DECOR:

Lawson Fenning – There are tons of great gifts at my all-time favorite Silver Lake furniture store, from glassware to hanging terrariums, slate cheese boards, rugs, books and a tons of other tasteful and stylish gifts. 1618 Silver Lake Blvd.

Hemingway And Pickett – This shop offers off-beat housewares like Realax Stools by Cloud that have axe handle legs (perfect for subtly passive aggressive gift giving!) and Rorschach inkblot pillows and tea towels. They also carry art, accessories ornaments and cards. 3208 W Sunset Blvd.

OK – A one-stop-shop for specialty housewares, including dinnerware from Heath and an assortment of ceramics, glass, sculpture, books, jewelry and even kid’s stuff. 1724 1/2 Silverlake Blvd.
Kellygreen Home – The perfect spot to grab eco-friendly items for the home that are still incredibly stylish. 4008 Santa Monica Blvd.
FASHION:

Mohawk General Store – They have scarves and (swoon) shoes from Rachel Comey, A.P.C. and Comme Des Garcons leather bags, jewelry by Samma and so much other brilliant stuff you’ll have a hard time not shopping for yourself. 4011 W Sunset Blvd.
Vivier and Bentley – If you’re shopping for a stylish woman, all you have to do is walk in this handbag and jewelry shop and grab the first thing that catches your eye. Trust me, she’ll love it. 1404 Micheltorena St.
After the break, best places in Silver Lake for gifts in Food + Wine, Health + Beauty and Kids!

Target’s designer collaborations with lines like Liberty of London, Jean Paul Gaultier, Zac Posen Alexander McQueen and many more, have brought high-end fashion to the masses for over five years. There is always a fashion feeding frenzy over the collaborations, thanks to an evil mix of advanced hype, secrecy, and a sense of urgency spurred on by Target’s limited-time-only events.

And now Target is joining forces with the luxury Italian home and fashion brand Missoni to release the 400-piece Missoni for Target collection. The line will include pretty much everything under the sun, including a plethora of zigzagged clothing for women, men, kids, and babies, shoes, knits, office products, luggage, housewares, accessories–even a Missoni-clad bike!

Of course, my eye is on the home decor, which is all Target-priced. Items range from $3 to $600 with most landing around $40. The Missoni for Target collection launches in stores and online September 13 and runs until October 22. But get there early if you want the good stuff! It will go fast.

If you’re planning to buy some Heath Ceramics this year, consider doing it within the next week. Now through Thursday, March 24th, Heath Ceramics is donating 25% of all online sales to Architecture for Humanity‘s relief efforts in Japan.
I’ve been thinking about white floors lately. More specifically, I’ve been wondering when it is OK to paint your hardwood floors? I love the look, and I could imagine wanting to do an all white room someday. But I could also see the response being: Oh, you painted over the wood!
But white floors paired with white walls makes art, furniture and color in a room really pop, like the pink here. For me, though, I tend to like warmer white on white rooms, like the top picture.
I love wide wood planks with exposed gaps between the boards, like this example at the left. Both of these spaces are very simple, peaceful.
More white floors after the break! Read more…

When I was little, I was a major snooper. I loved going through my father’s desk drawer. It was full of interesting odds and ends, which I would endlessly inspect: A wooden pipe, a package of tobacco, photos of my parents before they were married, and the most fascinating of all, a very old stethoscope, which I would use to listen to my heart and stomach and the heart and stomach of my dog.
I’d go through my mother’s drawers too–opening every jewelry box and slipping on her rings. But what I loved the most was her drawer of neatly folded silk scarves. The perfumed squares would spring up like a row of flowers begging my grubby little fingers to pluck them, sniff them, hold them to my cheek.
Over on Good Bones, Great Pieces, they posted this amazing Emilio Pucci scarf from the 1960s (top). I love the idea of framing and displaying vintage scarves so they don’t have to sit in a drawer. Framing textiles in general is a great way to display them.

They also posted this framed butterfly scarf, which resembles a real butterfly display cases, but is significantly less sad.

You must check out HGTV’s new show Secrets from a Stylist, hosted by Design Star winner Emily Henderson. Each week Emily helps a homeowner redo their home. On next Saturday’s episode, Emily is redecorating Joy (from Oh Joy!) and Bob Cho’s Silver Lake apartment. I saw a few advanced photos of how Joy’s place turned out and it looked amazing. I’m excited to see the transformation play out on television!

On last week’s episode, Emily made over Glee co-creator Ian Brennan’s California bungalow.

Ian’s living room before: A nice room with great light and built-ins, but just a little empty…
Emily gave the room more character by removing the blah window coverings and adding an eclectic mix of furniture–a traditional wingback chair, Persian rug, mod sofa, stainless steel coffee table, and Moroccan pouf. The gorgeous 1920′s fireplace becomes the room’s focal point by placing an intense portrait of President William Harrison above it.
Set your DVR for Secrets From a Stylist on HGTV for Saturday, March 19th at 9pm to see how Emily will makeover Joy’s Silver Lake home! The episode will also be available on HGTV’s website for the following week. And check out Emily’s blog for behind the scenes information too.
A while ago I found this great picture of Jonathan Adler’s living room through Kim Myles’ twitter page. In case you don’t know, Kim is an HGTV designer and a hairstylist–my idea of the perfect person!
According to Elle Décor, the crystal sailboat chandelier in Jonathan’s living room is from Burden Antiques & Works of Art in New York, but it looks exactly like a piece from Hans Van Bentem of Rock and Royal. Van Bentem is a Rotterdam-based artist who handcrafts these super sized, one-of-a-kind crystal chandeliers in unusual forms, like boats, bombs, and Buddhas. Each piece is handcrafted in high quality Italian glass and Bohemian crystal.
If you have your own chandelier concept, Van Bentem will custom make a piece in what ever design you dream up…

In the March issue of Architectural Digest, Donna Karan debuts her an organically shaped tabletop line in collaboration with the tableware company Lenox.
The line includes dinnerware, vases, flatware, stemware, and serving pieces made from porcelain, stoneware, glass, wood, and metal. “It’s very elemental, very close to who I am now,” Karan says of the collection.
The pieces are cast in muted hues and irregular shapes, tying together Karan’s two sides–the urbanite and the nomad–she says. “There’s a soul in the collection.”

Before his death last year, Alexander McQueen collaborated with The Rug Company to adapt his iconic patterns into a line of rugs and cushions. First up, Hummingbird, with iridescent hummingbirds in flight set against a dark background. The fine handwoven flat weave is crafted from cashmere. This hummingbird pattern is also available in cushion form.
Skull - Immediately recognizable as an Alexander McQueen, the skull pattern has been translated into this iconic rug in 200 knot wool and silk. It is entirely handmade using traditional methods. The skull pattern is also available in black and gold cushions.
