Silver Lake Holiday Shopping Guide

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday… They all came and went. Holiday shopping accomplished? Zero. Yes, I admit it. I’m a procrastinator. And if you’re like me, you know how brutal holiday slacker-shopping can be. As December chugs to it’s wrapping paper covered conclusion, frenzied shoppers hit the mall in a panicked wave, grabbing whatever is left, not pausing to contemplate: Will my dad appreciate this Old Navy Trapper Hat? … Whatever! Put it in the cart! Mark it off the list!

This year, make life easier and shop your neighborhood instead. And (note to self) maybe try to do it before the bitter end. Check out some of Take Sunset’s favorite spots in Silver Lake for gift giving…

HOME DECOR:

Lawson Fenning – There are tons of great gifts at my all-time favorite Silver Lake furniture store, from glassware to hanging terrariums, slate cheese boards, rugs, books and a tons of other tasteful and stylish gifts. 1618 Silver Lake Blvd.

Hemingway And Pickett – This shop offers off-beat housewares like Realax Stools by Cloud that have axe handle legs (perfect for subtly passive aggressive gift giving!) and Rorschach inkblot pillows and tea towels. They also carry art, accessories ornaments and cards. 3208 W Sunset Blvd.

OK – A one-stop-shop for specialty housewares, including dinnerware from Heath and an assortment of ceramics, glass, sculpture, books, jewelry and even kid’s stuff. 1724 1/2 Silverlake Blvd.

Kellygreen Home – The perfect spot to grab eco-friendly items for the home that are still incredibly stylish. 4008 Santa Monica Blvd.

FASHION:

Mohawk General Store – They have scarves and (swoon) shoes from Rachel Comey, A.P.C. and Comme Des Garcons leather bags, jewelry by Samma and so much other brilliant stuff you’ll have a hard time not shopping for yourself. 4011 W Sunset Blvd.

Vivier and Bentley – If you’re shopping for a stylish woman, all you have to do is walk in this handbag and jewelry shop and grab the first thing that catches your eye. Trust me, she’ll love it. 1404 Micheltorena St.

After the break, best places in Silver Lake for gifts in Food + Wine, Health + Beauty and Kids!

Sew L.A. In Silver Lake

I’m not a crafty, do-it-yourself type person. The thought of sewing something by hand makes me feel itchy, but I do admire other people who can put together a handmade outfit that doesn’t resemble the Theo Huxtable shirt. For those of you who are crafty or who are interesting in becoming a little more adept in that area, check out Sew L.A. in Silver Lake.

The second floor storefront on Silver Lake Boulevard (right across from LAMILL Coffee) can be easy to overlook. (I’d walked past it countless times assuming it was a tailor, but like I said, I repel craft.) Sew L.A. is actually a woman-owned, family-run fabric shop and sewing classroom. They have beginner to advanced classes, available for both private and group, where you can learn to sew home decor items, accessories, handbags, and apparel like skirts, dresses, basic tees, coats, kids items and more. Sew L.A. also carries gorgeous fabrics–mainly sourced from small companies and independent designers–both online and in the shop. They have really great online reviews, too!

Missoni for Target Collection

Target’s designer collaborations with lines like Liberty of London, Jean Paul Gaultier, Zac Posen Alexander McQueen and many more, have brought high-end fashion to the masses for over five years. There is always a fashion feeding frenzy over the collaborations, thanks to an evil mix of advanced hype, secrecy, and a sense of urgency spurred on by Target’s limited-time-only events.

And now Target is joining forces with the luxury Italian home and fashion brand Missoni to release the 400-piece Missoni for Target collection. The line will include pretty much everything under the sun, including a plethora of zigzagged clothing for women, men, kids, and babies, shoes, knits, office products, luggage, housewares, accessories–even a Missoni-clad bike!

Of course, my eye is on the home decor, which is all Target-priced. Items range from $3 to $600 with most landing around $40. The Missoni for Target collection launches in stores and online September 13 and runs until October 22. But get there early if you want the good stuff! It will go fast.

Structures & Style: Fashion Blueprints In West Hollywood

LA fashion gets a bad rap. It’s pointed to for flip flops at business meetings and dudes in bedazzled Ed Hardy. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that the anti-fashion stereotype is only partly true. There’s certainly a fair share of Christian Audigier and teacup Pomeranians rolling around in designer purses, but there’s also incredible fashion and gorgeous architecture around every corner. It is the intersection of fashion and architecture that West Hollywood’s Structures & Style: Fashion Blueprints is exploring and celebrating this Saturday, August 27th.

Beginning at 11am, there will be a guided walking and shuttle tour. Participants will explore the latest architecture, design, and fashion concepts at some of the top boutiques in West Hollywood, including 3.1 Phillip Lim, H.L.N.R., Alberta Ferretti, Roseark and Church Boutique. The event will close with a reception catered by Craig’s at the new West Hollywood Library. You’ll drink and dine while viewing the murals created by Shepard Fairey, Retna and Kenny Scharf. Most importantly, all proceeds go to the WEHO Community Housing Corporation, which raises money to build affordable housing for low-income families.

Tickets for the Structures & Style: Fashion Blueprints are $185, but for Take Sunset readers, there’s a special insider rate of $110! Go here to purchase your discount tickets directly through PayPal. And for more information, a detailed schedule and map, go here.

Painted Bird In Silver Lake

I love it when new stores open in the neighborhood, especially places where I can shop without maxing out my credit card! Back in April, Husband and wife team Nate Archer and Sunny Walker open Painted Bird in Silver Lake, just a few blocks from Sunset Junction. This is the shop’s second location. The original Painted Bird in San Francisco has been around since 2005.

Painted Bird carries a mix of vintage fashions for men and women, including layering basics, printed sundresses, denim, knits, silk pieces, handbags and jewelry. There are also new pieces from brands like Them Jeans and Alternative Apparel. Everything in the shop is marked at an affordable level, with most price tags under $80.

You can also find Painted Bird’s own line of handmade shoes, including oxfords, lace ups, buckle boots and sandals, all priced under $90! They sell out quickly when in stock, but they’re definitely worth checking out. Plus, you can buy, sell or trade your unwanted clothes for 35% in cash or 55% in trade for new (to you) merchandise. With all the affordability, Painted Bird doesn’t have that disorganized everything must go! Urban Outfitters sale section vibe. Rather, it feels like the ultra-cool closet of a vintage shopping pro. And lucky us–we get to raid it.

4208 Santa Monica Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90029

Vivier and Bentley In Silver Lake

Handbag designer Clare Vivier and jewelry designer Kathryn Bentley teamed up to launch a storefront and shared design studio in Silver Lake this spring, aptly named Vivier and Bentley. This place is seriously dangerous shopping territory for me. It’s as if someone has been watching my dreams and created a shop based from my fashion fantasies.

Before I checked out Vivier and Bentley in person, I scoped out Bentley’s jewelry and Vivier’s handbags online, but seeing their work in person was truly exceptional.

The storefront is actually tiny, but only a small part of the overall square footage is used for customers. The rest functions as a studio/workshop space. You can peek around the corner and see gorgeous, brightly colored leather stacked high, ready to be transformed into chic handbags.

Bentley’s jewelry is divided into two lines–the refined but still slightly tough Kathryn Bentley line, which uses precious stones and even diamonds, and the more accessible and organic Dream Collective. Prices range from around $50 to $2,500 for more serious pieces.

You’re Golden

Pantone says the color of the year is Honeysuckle, but personally I’m feeling gold. Especially when paired with creamy white. It’s just so, well, rich looking. But proceed with caution because with metallics in general you can quickly cross into gaudyville. Just a touch gets the point across. But I like my touch to have a twist…

Etch Pendant by Tom Dixon

Glass Skull by Esque Studio

What are some of your favorite gold accents?

Garden In Hell

Diana Vreeland (1906-1989) was a major visionary force in fashion and style during the twentieth century. She was fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar for twenty-five years, as well as editor-in-chief at Vogue. Vreeland was known for her passion, charm, and wit. She was endlessly quotable with statements like, “The bikini is the most important invention since the atom bomb” and “Never fear being vulgar, just boring”.

Vreeland herself was certainly never boring. In 1955 her Park Avenue apartment needed a bold and original decor to match. Vreeland worked with close friend and famous New York decorator Billy Baldwin to design the apartment, famously informing him, “I want this place to look like a garden, but a garden in hell.”

The end result was completely bloodred. Scarlet chintz covered with brilliant Persian flowers draped the room. Piles of patterned red pillows, a thick scarlet carpet, and a mix of red accessories completed the monochromatic look. Vreeland explained, “Red is the great clarifier–bright and revealing. I can’t imagine becoming bored with red–it would be like becoming bored with the person you love.”

Rodarte In LA

Rodarte: States of Matter presents works in fashion and costume design by Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte, including original ballet costumes for Black Swan. This is Rodarte’s first west coast exhibition. It is open now through June 5th at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Kate and Laura are California natives–born and raised in Pasadena, they returned to after college at UC Berkeley to launch Rodarte in 2005. The sisters recently gave Nowness an itinerary of their off-the-beaten-path hangouts in LA…

The Magic Castle – 7001 Franklin Avenue, Hollywood, CA 90028
This is one of the coolest places in LA. It’s a historic magicians club. We love to see sleight-of-hand experts and listen to Erma the ghost play the piano.

Bob Baker Marionette Theater – 1345 West 1st Street, Los Angeles, CA 90026
Bob makes all of his amazing marionettes and his performances are brilliant. His Nutcracker Suite is sold out every year.

The Natural History Museum – 900 Exposition Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90007
The gem room is our favorite room in Los Angeles. It’s lit in pale yellow and houses an incredible collection of Gold Rush jewelry. The walls are lined with glass shelves tinted by the jewel tones that rest on top.
