4624 El Reposo Dr
Los Angeles, CA 90041

5BR, 3BA
$585,000

Here’s a great opportunity to fix up a mid-century home in a great area and make it your own. It’s rare to find a home that offers this much in this part of Eagle Rock for this price these days. While the inside clearly needs updating, you get 5 bedrooms, 3 baths, a pool, views, location and over 2,400 square feet to play with.

1366 Wildwood Dr
Los Angeles, CA 90041

3 BR, 1.75 BA
$698,000

Here’s a candidate for Listing Of The Year. Perched high above it all in a great Eagle Rock location is this iconic mid-century modern home. Built in 1950 (did it influence Lautner when he built The Chemosphere in 1960?) this circular home features exposed wood beams, a period fireplace, concrete floors and all the privacy you could ever need.

1606 Silverwood Dr
Los Angeles, CA 90041

3 BR, 4 BA
$849,000

This modern traditional listing just hit the market in Eagle Rock. People always talk about getting more for your money in Eagle Rock and I think this is a good example. While the price is high, you get over 4,200 square feet, amazing views from nearly every room, an artist studio, a two-level master suite, and multiple decks and outdoor entertaining spaces. In Silver Lake this house would definitely top the $1 million mark.

1959 Escarpa Drive In Eagle Rock

1959 Escarpa Dr
Los Angeles, CA 90041

3 BR, 2 BA
$699,000

Here’s a very exciting new listing: a beautifully renovated 1950’s mid-century post & beam on a great street in Eagle Rock for a very reasonable price. As anyone who reads this blog knows, I love this style of architecture and am usually posting listings from more expensive neighborhoods (like the Hollywood Hills, Silver Lake, Sherman Oaks) so it’s great to see such a nice-looking property in the more affordable Eagle Rock.

Interview With Designer Meredith Kleinman

mkSince establishing her own interior design and event styling studio in 2005, Meredith Kleinman has certainly made her mark in the Los Angeles design community. Her award-winning residential projects have been featured on Design Sponge and Apartment Therapy while attracting celebrity and other high-profile clients who are drawn to her creative and affordable work.

Kleinman took some time out of her schedule to talk about what inspires her – both in L.A and out:

Take Sunset: Where do you look for inspiration when you take on a new project?

Meredith Kleinman: I let the space tell me what it needs — when was it built, how it is situated in the land, if the circulation makes sense, and so I have ideas that stem from this. Then I let the client tell what they need (if they can) and who they are as people.  Everything starts happening pretty fast after this.

TS: What are you biggest design and artistic influences?

MK: R.M. Schindler, Le Corbusier, anything Japanese, Tony Duquette, Giotto, Wary Meyers, William Morris, the sets on Pedro Almodovar’s films, and a thousand others.

The Eagle’s Landing In Eagle Rock

eagles-landing-eagle-rock

As I was driving through Eagle Rock after a showing yesterday I noticed this new little coffee shop that just opened up in a quiet residential part of the neighborhood. Eagle’s Landing is part of the non-profit and community focused Rock Community Center and caters towards students from nearby Eagle Rock High School and Occidental College.

The shop serves typical coffee beverages – mochas, lattes, esperessos, etc – as well as sandwiches and breakfast. In addition, half of the proceeds goes to benefit the local teen center which shares the building. Make Eagle’s Landing a stop on your morning commute and help this good cause!

4217 Scandia Way In Eagle Rock

4217 Scandia Way
Los Angeles, CA 90065

3 BR, 2.5 BA
$899,000 $859,000

Perched on the top of a hill near the end of a dead end street overlooking Eagle Rock and Highland Park, this new listing certainly takes advantage of the dramatic location. Nearly every square inch of the house seems to have a view – a good plan since the view is simply incredible. The exterior reminds me of this mid-century Schindler, but the inside is where the Schindler comparisons end.

The upstairs has a big kitchen/dining room and a nice sized living room as well (with a big deck). Downstairs are the bedrooms, laundry room and bathrooms. Some of the design was a little too modern for my taste, but overall I found this house to be surprisingly comfortable.

This is an expensive house for Eagle Rock, but with more people looking in the area I’m sure it will get some offers. If you’re looking for a Hollywood Hills style house in Northeast L.A., then this definitely check this out!

Bohemian Modern: Living In Silver Lake

I picked up a great book this weekend – Bohemian Modern: Living in Silver Lake by Barbara Bestor. It’s a beautifully designed and packaged book that looks at the unique architecture throughout Silver Lake. Definitely a must-have for any current or prospective Silver Lake home owner:

Through striking illustrations and stunning photographs, Bohemian Modern explores the unique structural and interior designs that have put California’s ultra-chic Silver Lake neighborhood at the forefront of a new style phenomenon.

One of the country’s most renowned modernist architects, Barbara Bestor has fully embraced and perfected Silver Lake’s “bohemian modern” style: a practical philosophy that is Californian in origin but achievable anywhere. It is a look that favors raw, authentic materials, brilliant colors, creative space planning, and a natural flow between indoors and outdoors.

The results, as Bohemian Modern presents, are striking: a flawlessly restored Neutra house decorated with both whimsy and restraint, a rooftop constructed for viewing the stars, a lavish outdoor garden delicately integrated into the surrounding architecture, a double-sided bookcase that soars three stories and serves as a functional art installation…there is no limit to the creativity and beauty of Silver Lake style.

Both modern and classic, refreshing and inviting, Bohemian Modern will delight readers with its breathtaking, vividly photographed tour of Silver Lake.
