ModOp Transforms 100-Year-Old Craftsman

Ave56-alexandra-becket

ModOp Design, run by husband and wife Greg Steinberg and Alexandra Becket, is known for their incredible attention to detail. Take Sunset was excited to sit down with ModOp’s interior designer/stager Alexandra to discuss the challenges of transforming their newest listing, a 100-year-old craftsman in Highland Park.

Avenue-56-exterior

Take Sunset: What was the condition of Avenue 56 when you began work?

Alexandra Becket: The original redwood siding was in bad shape, the plumbing and electrical was in horrible condition, and the layout of the rooms made it feel cramped, dark and dingy. But the house had great character, and its original charm was still intact. We knew that even though rehabilitating it would be a challenge, we couldn’t wait to give the house a new life.

Ave56-living-room

TS: There are amazing details carried throughout your staging. Can you talk a little about why such elements are important to you?

Becket: I imagined who will live in the house–someone who appreciates the history of Los Angeles architecture, the neighborhood, and its current charm. All the artwork is locally based, including the print of City Hall by LA-based artist William Acedo in the living room and my fabric wall hanging of the DWP building in the hallway.

Ave56-office-detail

Becket (cont.): The collection of Highland Park photos in the studio/office developed as we worked on the house, and I discovering the beauty of the area. When I stopped for lunch or ran errands, I snapped photos of the historic Highland Park Theater, the old bank buildings, restaurants, and the colorful produce store down the street. I printed and framed a collection of these shots, all taken on Ave 56, as homage to the street. I hope to provide prospective homebuyers an emotional connection to the house and to fall in love with the beauty of the neighborhood!

Ave56-custom-cabinets

TS: There are many high-quality materials used throughout the home, like the custom made wood cabinets in the kitchen. Why did you make this choice as opposed to using less pricey (and less time consuming) materials? Read more…
