Lloyd Wright Lecture & Tour

lloyd-wright-sowden-house

Fans of Lloyd Wright get ready – there are two events coming up that will highlight the life and work of the distinguished son of one of the world’s most famous architects. Before his father moved to L.A., Lloyd Wright was already establishing himself in the city that would be his permanent home. Dana Hutt, an architecture historian and co-author of “Lloyd Wright: The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright Jr”, will highlight Wright’s efforts to create an architecture unique to Southern California, his experimentation with materials and new building technologies, and his most significant works in a career that spanned 6 decades in a lecture entitled “Lloyd Wright: Architecture of Sunlight And Shadow.” The talk will take place at the Art Center College of Design, Ahmanson Auditorium, 1700 Lida St., Pasadena on May 1st at 7:30pm.

Event number two is a tour of three Lloyd Wright homes including the infamous Sowden House (top).  The Taggart House (above) would be a great addition as well, but the final list will be coming soon. The tour takes place May 8th and is $45 for non-members and $35 for members/students.

Pasadena is full of amazing mid-century architecture so this should be a great chance to see some amazing homes up close. This is a self-drive tour and docents will be giving guided tours from 9-4pm at the homes. Plan on allotting 5 hours to see all the homes.

The Offramp Gallery In Pasadena

the-offramp-gallery

Art galleries seem to pop up just about everywhere in L.A. and the Offramp Gallery is another good example of this trend. Located in a private historic residence in northwest Pasadena that was originally built as a one-story bungalow in 1924, the gallery is now owned and run by gallery director Jane Chafin and architect Chaz Alexander. The two bought the property in December 2007 and currently reside there.

The Offramp Gallery opened on September 14th, 2008 and for the past year and a half it has been host to a number of contemporary art galleries including works by Aron Goldberg, Linsley Lambert and many more.
