It’s not every day that a house like this in Atwater Village comes on the market, since many homes in the area were built in the 1920s and 30s and are Bungalows or Spanish style.

This 1,800 square foot home was built in 1939 and has a mid-century modern feel with vaulted wood beamed ceilings, open floor plan, brick fireplace and more.

Those of you within walking distance of Atwater Village Farm, I’m seriously jealous. The newly opened shop offers affordable, organic farm-to-table produce, meat and bread from local and regional farms. They also carry specialty items from local vendors, such as mustard, pickles, jam, honey, olive oil, nuts and more.

The shop just opened on Friday, but it’s been generating buzz since early last summer–thanks in part to owner Piper Goldstein, who’s been known to farm in a gold lamé dress. Goldstein, a former rock tour chef for Beastie Boys and The Black Eyed Peas, transformed her own Atwater Village backyard into a farm while recovering from a major shoulder injury. What started out as a personal evolution, ultimately grew into a business idea and community project. Goldstein wanted the people of Atwater Village directly involved in the business’ start up, so the shop was partially funded through Kickstarter.com–a fundraising platform for creative projects. (If you missed the fundraising video, it’s still worth a look.) Ultimately, 191 community supporters donated $22,365.

After the new year, the store will continue to evolve into a community meeting place with educational programs, cookbook signings from farm-to-table chefs, cooking classes, happy hours and produce basket subscriptions.
Atwater Village Farm is open seven days a week from 11am to 8pm. They will be closed Christmas Day and New Years Day, but they’re open on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve from 11am to 4pm so you can grab last minute items.

Just saw this cute Spanish craftsman in Atwater Village today. It was built in 1924 and maintains many period details, like coved ceilings, hardwood floors, and a wood-burning fireplace in the living room.

It has been updated to include new copper pipes, upgraded electrical panel and breakers, a newer hot water heater and new subway tile in the bath.

Built in Atwater Village in 1928, this home is one of a handful of “fantasy bungalows” built along Brunswick in the 1920s. The homes have exotic designs, brightly colored turrets, cupolas and arched entryways–influenced by Hollywood’s silent film sets of the time. According to the Los Angeles Conservancy, this home is part of “the most architecturally distinct parts of Atwater, and Los Angeles, overall.” Early developers built these fantasy bungalows in rows of lots, with all the homes around 1,100 square feet with 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, floor or wall furnaces, and an icebox for ice delivery.

3636 Brunswick is one of three similar homes in a row. Currently, the residence’s dramatic Egyptian revival exterior is covered by foliage, as you can see on Google Street View. The above photo from Los Angeles Conservancy gives you an idea of how the trio of homes would have looked back in the 1920s. (3636 Brunswick is the white home on the far left.)

The Mizuno Studio/Residence, built in 1964 with later additions, is an extremely unique listing for Atwater Village. Not only is the price as high as you’ll see for a house in the area, it’s a mid-century modern home in a neighborhood of traditional and Spanish homes.
Owned by Japanese-born, Los Angeles-based ceramic artist Mineo Mizuno, the 3,886 square foot property combines art, architecture, and landscape into one live/work environment.

There is a sense of peace and tranquility throughout the home, along with tremendous indoor-outdoor flow and a celebration of Mizuno’s Japanese cultural heritage.

People are buzzing about The Mews, a new single-family home development being built in Atwater Village. These 23 solar-powered Eco-friendly homes range from 1500 to 1600 square feet and contain a 2-car garage, high ceilings, open floor plan and courtyards. But what has people excited is their claim that the homes are “20% bigger than homes in the area and yet priced lower than similar-sized homes in Atwater Village and Silver Lake.” Also, since this is technically not a condo, no HOAs! (just a small $50/month fee)

I have yet to see the homes in person (Phase 1 was only recently completed) so I can’t comment on the size of the units, but if the design is as sleek and enticing as their Web site leads me to believe, then this could be a great opportunity for first-time homebuyer or those looking to upgrade their current living situation.

Jerry Hoffman, the Realtor handling the sales, has been keeping a very extensive and informative blog about the whole process. Check it out here. The grand opening is coming soon and sales and previews start this month. Visit their Web site to learn more.
