Pierre Koenig, the architect who designed Case Study House #22 the Stahl House, one of my all-time favorite homes, designed this residence for Harold and Martha Henbest in 1966.

As with most of Koenig’s designs, the visual impact of the residence from street level is understated, but once past the walled and gated entry, it is dramatic with a unique, folded-plate roofline flanked by opposing glass walls creating an open and light-filled space.

One of Koenig’s mantras when teaching is the importance of microclimates. He tells students to become familiar with the climatic conditions on building sites, and to design for what actually exists. That philosophy is clearly at work here and the Rancho Palos Verdes location takes ample advantage of its ocean view and climate.

The Koenig’s original design includes a formal living room, separate dining room, kitchen, and adjoining family room. The 2,744 square feet of interior space is placed with a strong orientation to the outdoor area.

There are mature Japanese-influenced gardens on the 12,000 square foot grounds.

And ocean views!

This home is a true Pierre Koening; it’s presented in virtually unaltered condition. If you’d like to see this spectacular mid-century in Rancho Palos Verdes, email me or call me at 323-775-6305!
