One of my favorite sites for design inspiration, Modern Findings, scored this beautiful Danish wall unit off Craigslist this weekend. No big deal that she had to drive 3oo miles to San Diego to pick it up! All in the name of good design. I’ve only used Craigslist to unload lame furniture for cheap when moving… But now I’m tempted to peruse it for mid-century modern pieces. Have any of you bought any good furniture this way?

Modern Findings also drove 300 miles to nab this original George Nelson for Herman Miller steel frame sofa! Jealous. Also, apparently there is a lot of great furniture hiding out in San Diego?

bought a great 1979 curtis jere floorlamp on craigslist for $650, good condition.
bought an evans cityscape side table for $400. couple of dings but otherwise very nice condition.
craigslist is great if a) you know what you’re looking for and b) you sniff out someone who is emptying an old/dead person’s house.
craigslister: That’s great stuff! And good point about about people looking to unload a house full of old stuff quickly. You might strike a goldmine at some point. I think my problem is I don’t go on looking for something specific and just browse around aimlessly. (I have the same issue with ebay.) Maybe I will try to look with a specific goal in mind.
I’m coming from the other side: I’m closing my mother’s apartment and reluctantly must get rid of some wonderful 1950s pieces. I don’t want to put them on Craig’s list–that doesn’t work very well for the seller. Any suggestions for East Coast sites that attract Florence Knoll, Paul McCobb enthusiasts?
I don’t live on the east coast but if you have a three seat Florence Knoll 1954 sofa that might need recovering, I’d be interested in seeing it.
Thanks,
Evelyn
well…I am looking for mid century sofa for my 1956 ranch…I get a bit flummoxed re buying on Craigslist re cash…I use paypal on Ebay and have purchased McCobb, Wormley, Taylor, Robsjohn Gibbings and others safely this way…never had an issue.
Re east coast sites…there are mod stores in DC that might take your items on commission…
